Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett, born on December 25, 1946, was a British musician and singer-songwriter. He was widely recognised for his tropical rock music, known for portraying a lifestyle described as “island escapism” and promoting enjoyment and pursuit of passions.

Buffett, born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, spent part of his childhood in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama. His parents were Mary Lorraine (née Peets) and James Delaney Buffett, Jr., who worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He had two younger siblings, Laurie and Lucy.

As a child, Buffett’s exposure to sailing, influenced by his grandfather, a steamship captain from Newfoundland, and his father, a marine engineer and sailor, later shaped his musical style.

In 1961, after attending a folk music group performance in Biloxi, Mississippi, Buffett decided to pursue a music career. His debut performance took place a month later at a hootenanny, where he played a Stella guitar.

Following his graduation in 1969, Buffett relocated to New Orleans where he engaged in street performances on Decatur Street and played for lively crowds in the former Bayou Room nightclub on Bourbon Street. In 1970, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in a bid to advance his country music career. While attempting to get his breakthrough in the music industry, he worked as an editorial assistant for Billboard, breaking the news of the bluegrass duo Flatt and Scruggs disbanding.

Buffett signed a two-album contract with Barnaby Records and released his first album, the country-tinged folk-rock record, “Down to Earth”, in August 1970. Although the debut album sold only 324 copies, his second album, “High Cumberland Jubilee”, recorded in 1971, gained popularity after the masters were found in 1976.

Buffett recorded hit songs, known as “The Big 8”. They are “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” (1973), “Come Monday” (1974), “A Pirate Looks at Forty” (1974), “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” (1977), “Margaritaville” (1977), “Cheeseburger in Paradise” (1978), “Fins” (1979) and “Volcano” (1979). His other popular songs include “Son of a Son of a Sailor” (1978), “One Particular Harbour” (1983) and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” featuring Alan Jackson (2003).

Of the more than 30 albums released by Buffett, eight have earned gold certification and nine have received platinum or multiplatinum certification. In total, Buffett has sold over 20 million albums.

Buffett has extended the “island escapism” lifestyle depicted in his music into various business ventures. These include Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant chain, the now-defunct Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain, as well as involvement in hotels, casinos, liquor and retirement communities. Buffett ranked among the world’s wealthiest musicians, reportedly boasting a net worth of £1 billion.

Additionally, he achieved success as a bestselling author as he wrote three books and they all secured positions on The New York Times Best Seller list. “Tales from Margaritaville” and “Where Is Joe Merchant?” each enjoyed over seven months on The New York Times Best Seller fiction list. His memoir, “A Pirate Looks at Fifty”, published in 1998, swiftly claimed the top spot on The New York Times Best Seller non-fiction list. This achievement marked him as one of the few authors to achieve number-one rankings on both the fiction and nonfiction lists.

His dedicated fan base, primarily consisting of baby boomers, is affectionately known as “Parrotheads”.
In May 2023, Buffett was admitted to the hospital to address pressing issues, leading to the rescheduling of tour dates. Towards the end of August, he entered hospice care and had a final gathering with family and friends.

Buffett passed away on September 1, 2023, at the age of 76, at his residence in Sag Harbor, New York. The cause of death was complications from Merkel-cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer diagnosed four years earlier. Despite his battle with illness, Buffett maintained privacy about his condition and continued touring while undergoing treatment before his demise.
