The Championships, Wimbledon, often known as The Championships or just Wimbledon, is the world’s oldest tennis event and usually considered as the most prestigious. It has been hosted at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, with a retractable cover over Centre Court since 2009 and a retractable roof over No. 1 Court since 2019.

The trophy at Wimbledon is retained by the tournament. The players get to handle it and go on a media tour with it, but get replicas to take home with them.

The trophies presented at Wimbledon

The winner of the Gentlemen’s Singles competition receives a silver gilt cup that is 18.5 inches in height and 7.5 inches in diameter. The trophy, which has been given since 1887, is inscribed with the words “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” The original trophy is kept in the All England Club’s museum, therefore the champion receives a three-quarter-size copy of the Cup inscribed with the names of all previous champions.

The winner of the Ladies’ Singles receives a sterling silver salver known as the “Venus Rosewater Dish,” or simply the “Rosewater Dish.” The salver, which measures 18.75 inches in diameter, is adorned with mythological character.

Silver cups are awarded to the winners of the Gentlemen’s Doubles, Ladies’ Doubles, and Mixed Doubles competitions. Unlike previous Grand Slam competitions, where the winning Doubles tandem shares a single trophy, each player in the Doubles pair receives a trophy. The Duchess of Kent presented the All England Club with the Ladies’ Doubles Trophy, a silver cup and cover known as The Duchess of Kent Challenge Cup, in 1949. The Mixed Doubles Trophy is a challenge cup made of silver.

The winner is traditionally presented with the trophy by the President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the Duke of Kent, before walking a lap around the court to show the trophy to the spectators and photographers. The winner does not keep the trophy, which is kept in the All-England club’s museum, but from 1949 to 2006, all Champions received a miniature replica of the trophy, and beginning in 2007, all Champions received a three-quarter replica of the trophy, bearing the names of all past Champions.
