When the bread is old I toast it. I usually eat it with butter and some mature cheese

I may end up living on toast and tea. There is such a phenomena of older people living on simple meals like toast and tea: The 'tea and toast syndrome' refers to malnutrition in seniors due to their lack of desire or inability to prepare and/or eat proper meals, relying instead on simple fare such as tea and toast.

It’s come to my attention...

I love toast. Every since I was a little kid it has been a comfort food. But the bread has to be good bread. I don't eat cheap white bread toasted. Stopped doing that by the time I was 14. Now I like fresh bakery made multigrain high fiber bread, toasted with unsalted butter slathered all over it, and orange marmalade. Sometimes I'll sprinkle cinnamon on it instead of marmalade.

by Anonymousreply 5October 11, 2020 12:43 PM

My fave is rye which getting more difficult to find. Cinnamon is another fave.

Toast is okay but I would prefer a biscuit.

I have a friend who lives in Paris. I've asked him to send a toaster to me as I've always wanted to try French toast.

Toasted bread is fine when appropriate but I hate the smell of toasted "Wonderbread" style bread. Almost as bad as the smell of peanut butter. A combination of the two is nauseating.

The British live their toast topped with baked beans. A nutritional, economical, and filling meal.

Toasted brioche or challah with lots of butter

What is “mature cheese “? Is it gross?

by Anonymousreply 12October 11, 2020 3:13 PM

R12 aged cheese you idiot.

by Anonymousreply 13October 11, 2020 3:14 PM

“Mature” and “cheese” on Datalounge. Makes me think of uncut senior citizen. Fine, I am an idiot. But mature cheese still sound funny. Don’t say it again on a food threat.

by Anonymousreply 14October 11, 2020 3:25 PM

R14 seriously? Get your arse to the Netherlands after covid! Our mature cheese is exquisite. In Britain it’s called mature, literally translated from Dutch it would be “old cheese”. I thought I was explaining myself well haha. Anyway it’s great on a sandwich or on toasted bread. Or just without bread and with some mustard.

by Anonymousreply 15October 11, 2020 7:19 PM

Dear lR14 you made laugh, you bastard.

by Anonymousreply 16October 11, 2020 9:21 PM

I like to toast raisin bread with cinnamon, then butter it up. A good snack, or quick lunch.

by Anonymousreply 17October 11, 2020 11:09 PM

Toast a slice of thick brioche challah.

Slather on some butter.

Then add a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk.

Pop under the broiler til it browns just a little.

Oh, yes.

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2020 11:19 PM

I don't like to smell toast when there is none in the toaster.

by Anonymousreply 20October 11, 2020 11:21 PM

I enjoy a nice slice of Panettone toasted, especially when I can find it at CVS for under $6 a loaf.

by Anonymousreply 21October 11, 2020 11:44 PM

I just had some Maple Streusel breakfast bread from Aldi. Delicious as is or toasted with butter.

by Anonymousreply 22October 11, 2020 11:55 PM

My favorites are rye or multigrain with lots of seeds. Dry, with tea. I eat the crust first. Then I carefully separate the slice into two thin halves and eat them separately, toasted side to my tongue. This way, I enjoy its sandpaper-like effect in my mouth before swallowing.

by Anonymousreply 23October 11, 2020 11:58 PM

If I'm breakfasting at a commercial establishment, finding the butter too hard to spread, I just skip ahead to the jam.

Here's to the ladies who lunch...

by Anonymousreply 26October 12, 2020 12:12 AM

I could live on toast and butter. Ever since I was a kid. When I was forced to bring a sandwich to grade school, I insisted on just toast and butter. I eventually branched out to toast with mayo (yeah - it was the 70s so parents were less uptight)

I’ve attributed it to being Irish - tea and Irish bread and butter was everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 27October 12, 2020 12:15 AM

My toaster got too gross so I threw it out. Now I need a new toaster and am missing toast. Toasting in the oven just seems to dry out and harden the bread too much.

Doesn't this thread belong in the Underwhelming Thread?

I'm more of a toasted muffin kind of guy.

Toast with marmalade or dulce de leech. Yum! A perfect snack.

by Anonymousreply 31October 12, 2020 12:34 AM

Toasted sourdough bread with lots of butter = pure happiness

by Anonymousreply 32October 12, 2020 12:40 AM

R6 I've noticed that myself about rye. What's up with that?

by Anonymousreply 33October 12, 2020 12:48 AM

Dear god -autocorrect turned dulce de leche into "leech"! Oh, the humanity!

by Anonymousreply 34October 12, 2020 12:52 AM

Only if it’s farm fresh butter.

by Anonymousreply 36October 12, 2020 12:58 AM

Toasted French baguette with French butter (Trader Joe's) and a big cafe au lait.

by Anonymousreply 37October 12, 2020 3:51 AM

Well, butter my buns and call me a biscuit!

by Anonymousreply 38October 12, 2020 8:52 PM

R15 - yeah but it smells like feet after a day in sneakers.

by Anonymousreply 39October 12, 2020 8:56 PM

Whole wheat toast with butter and applesauce is delicious. My grandmother used to give that to us as kids. Apple butter is delicious too but sometimes I'm not in the mood for cinnamon or "warm spices."

by Anonymousreply 40October 12, 2020 9:18 PM

Toast with either marmite, pâté or peanut butter. Don’t bother with butter.
