It is not new for athletes to grow up being fans of a particular team but when they get their shot and are picked by a rival team; they are required to suppress their personal appreciation and admiration for their favorite team as idols go on to become rivals. Tom Brady, for the longest time, has admitted that he has been a lifetime fan of the San Francisco 49ers.

The quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was profoundly impacted by the team in his childhood days. This was the time when the legendary Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana was playing in his prime. Montana is arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of the San Francisco 49ers, and he inspired Tom Brady to play football and take up the quarterback position.

Tom’s memories with the team date back to his childhood when his entire family used to go to the home games of the 49ers. Recently, when Tom Brady was a free agent for the first time in his career, he expressed intent to play for the Bay Area, however, that plan did not come to fruition as the 49ers were not interested enough to cut a deal to bring Tom on.

Tom Brady’s love for the San Francisco 49ers turned into hate after the team passed on an opportunity to get him:

Fans have also been speculating that there is a distinct possibility of Tom playing his final season out as part of the San Francisco 49ers, however, at this juncture, these are just rumors. This Sunday, Tom Brady will be playing in the Bay Area against his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to face them.

When asked about what is running through his head and his emotions attached to the 49ers, here is what Tom had to say, “I’ll always consider myself a California kid, and I grew up obviously loving Joe Montana and Steve Young and going to the 49er games that’s when I fell in love with football and we’d sit up there in the nosebleeds and we’d have four tickets, my mom and dad would go, I would usually go, and then one of my sisters would go.”

The San Francisco 49ers’ bond with Tom Brady is deep, it is a reminder of those childhood days for the quarterback when he would watch the games with his family by his side. The QB went on to appreciate the greatness of the team at that time by giving flowers to the players on the 49ers during that era.

“I was lucky to grow up in the Bay Area at that time, it was just a great time, there were so many great players, a great era of football. I love the 49ers, I love them through college, and then when they skipped over me 6 times, I hate the 49ers, and that’s just the way it went down.“

Tom is referring to the 2000 NFL draft where he was picked in the 6th round at number 199 by the New England Patriots. Before the Pats, the 49ers had six opportunities to choose him but they picked QB Giovanni Carmazzi before Brady. That may have been one of their biggest mistakes as Carmazzi never played a single NFL game after he was drafted. Tom Brady did get the last laugh over the San Francisco 49ers.
