Owning the Dallas Cowboys typically requires immense wealth, exemplified by Jerry Jones, whose net worth exceeds $14 billion. The 81-year-old has steadily built his fortune throughout his business career. While someone of his financial stature can generally afford anything, the Cowboys owner has some interesting perspectives on this.

He was speaking with reporters at the Dallas Cowboys training camp responding to their questions about the franchise and their goals on Thursday. ESPN reporter Laurie Horesh noted these words from Jones after he spoke about Dak Prescott and revealed them through his official X account.

I’ve had a lot of things I wanted that I couldn’t get because I couldn’t afford it… Sometimes when you get a bump like that you turn around and do better than you would have had you got what you wanted.

Those words suggest the owner cum GM is at a crossroads regarding the contract extension of his starting quarterback. The actual question is what he was hinting at.

It either could be that he thinks that extending Dak Prescott right now could push the price up to a point where he or rather, the Dallas Cowboys cannot afford it long-term. He would rather wait to see how the season pans out and then go about negotiating the salary.

After praising Dak Prescott, Jerry Jones adds this thought:

“I’ve had a lot of things I wanted that I couldn’t get because I couldn’t afford it… Sometimes when you get a bump like that you turn around & do better than you would have had you got what you wanted.”

Or it could also mean that he could be looking at a scenario where he might have to draft or trade for another quarterback next season. Either way, his words have made it clear that for the franchise to be competitive now as well as in the foreseeable future, he cannot afford to pay what Prescott wants.

Jerry Jones is a smart businessman

A person would not build a $14 billion net worth by making hasty decisions. Rather it is a culmination of a lot of shrewd decisions, that businessmen of that stature generally make. It is possible that Jerry Jones has something up his sleeve that no one has any clue of.

One could be that he has a certain Trey Lance sitting in the same quarterback locker room. Lance is a former lottery pick and is still only 24 years old. Jones is as shrewd as they get when it comes to decisions. He traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Lance and declined his 4th-year option. Then resigned this off-season to a bargain contract. Next year, he might not have to pay him much to keep him around.

Could it be that he has Trey Lance as a backup? Just in case Jerry Jones feels he could improve the roster in other areas than allot 25% of the entire team’s cap space over one player who has not helped them win more than two playoff games to date.
