Leeds United want Freddie Woodman but face a battle with Rangers in the race to sign the former Newcastle United goalkeeper.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who claim that Preston North End ace Woodman is attracting major interest.

It’s suggested that Rangers fancy bringing Woodman to Ibrox in a £3.5million move with Michael Beale eyeing a new first-choice stopper.

However, there is still interest in England with two Premier League clubs – Leeds and Leicester City – also mentioned in the race.

PNE are allegedly open to a sale this summer despite only signing Woodman last summer.

Rangers and Leeds certainly had scouts at PNE’s 0-0 draw with Coventry City on Tuesday night and may well have been there to watch Woodman.

Freddie Woodman could be tempted by Premier League return

Woodman was long backed for a bright future at Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old won the Under-20 World Cup with England back in 2017 and big things were expected.

Sadly, Woodman never really made the grade at Newcastle and they were happy to let him move on to Preston North End last summer.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

Woodman has been a mainstay of the PNE side ever since and is considered to be one of the Championship’s top goalkeepers.

A move to Leeds could be a surprise; Woodman surely wouldn’t want to be a second-choice goalkeeper at Leeds but maybe an Illan Meslier exit could open the door.

Yet Woodman may feel that he needs to have another shot at Premier League success.

It didn’t work out at Newcastle but Magpies boss Eddie Howe told the Northern Echo in May 2022 that he thinks Woodman is an ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper.

It seems natural that Woodman will get another Premier League chance one day and Leeds may well make their move at the end of the season.
