I can't believe the owner Les is still alive.

Les Natali has been accused of being racist and unwelcoming to Blacks at his various businesses.

Not only did Badlands discriminate against people of color, they were also agesist. If you were over 45 and dared walk into Badlands, you were treated like a leper and would be lucky to get service from the bartenders.
Ironic, since Les, the owner, is 115 years old himself.

The Castro is abysmal these days.
After nightfall it seems like tumbleweeds of syringes and trash float the streets. Walking zombies of druggies entice you like a cactus.
In part, I blame it on the locals themselves. They refused to change with the world, holding on to their prominence in gay history, and "different" ways. Overtime, different became weird. Which wasn't horrible. But then it became dated and a relic.
I don't see any hope for revitalization as all that's left there these days are strollers and old queens holding on to their rent-controlled apartments for dear life.
