This past week my husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Brytani Laird, D.C. during an in office visit for our newborn, William Allan and our seven year old, Riley Mae. We immediately felt comfortable and at ease as Dr. Brytani is not only friendly but very descriptive during her adjustments of both children. She shared a wealth of knowledge pertaining to issues newborns and older children can have that chiropractic care can help alleviate. And as a mother of four herself she understands and relates to her patients/parents and truly wants to make life better for each and every single one of them.

Newborn issues include:

  • Torticollis - Is a muscle spasm that occurs in the neck and upper shoulders. A baby with torticollis will have their head turned or tilted to one side and refuse to turn or tilt their head in the opposite direction.
  • Colic
  • Reflux
  • Trauma
  • Ear Infections
  • Flat Head
  • Breastfeeding/latching problems
  • Uneven Movement
  • Refusing to sit or constantly crying in the car seat
  • Refusing to lay flat or wanting to be carried up on the shoulder

Issues in older children include:

  • Neurodevelopmental disorders (ie: ADD/ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, etc.)
  • Bedwetting
  • Ear Infections
  • Sinus Congestion
  • Allergies
  • Boost Immune System
  • Asthma
  • Scoliosis

My family has utilized chiropractic care for years now and every child in our home was adjusted shortly after birth. Our personal experience is that it is extremely beneficial. Especially in helping newborns pass gas or air bubbles easily. Babies are curled up in our bellies for 9 months, so of course they need to straighten or adjust to assure all aspects of the body are working together correctly. The Dr. will make sure before leaving that you have the skills and knowledge to help your baby at home relieve stomach discomfort. This alone has saved us from hours of our babies being uncomfortable and screaming through the pain.

Dr. Brytani was able to loosen Williams jaw muscles, which helps the bones to align ensuring he latches correctly while breastfeeding. Often undetected trauma (ie: use of forceps or suction during delivery) can make it difficult for the baby to form a tight seal with the mouth because of misalignments in the muscles of the jaw. She warned us that he may spit up more than normal because he will be taking in more milk during a feeding. And she was absolutely correct! But now we know he is more relaxed and not working as hard to feed.

It was amazing to watch how calm our little man stayed during the entire adjustment. My husband and I told Dr. Brytani, "If we were to do these things to him he would scream at us." Now that is not an absolute but we imagine it that way. She definitely has a way with babies though and we couldn't be any happier that we choose her to work on William.

We decided to make the appointment for our daughter, Riley Mae, because she had complained of her back and neck hurting numerous times over the past couple of months. She did not have a specific accident that we knew of to attribute to her discomfort but she is a very rough little girl that plays hard outside daily. This also includes jumping on the trampoline with her friends every day which could be the source of her misalignment. Again, Dr. Brytani made Riley feel very comfortable with her. She let her pick where she was going to be worked on, told her what she was doing and why and engaged in conversation so that Riley would speak up about where her issues were originating from. Dr. Brytani did find that her hips were off balance, her neck was tight and she had a slight bend in her spine. Nothing really super abnormal but all issues she could treat. Riley stated she felt relaxed after her visit and she obeyed the doctors orders to drink water for the next 24 hours. And of course we didn't mind that rule at all! She has a follow up appointment in a week and I expect it might take a few visits to get her back to normal but that is expected with chiropractic care and we are happy to bring her.
