My boy students today told me that they want to watch "that show from the 80s with the three old sisters." Eventually I realized they meant the Golden Girls. So I showed them the show intro and they said that's the one. What are the five best episodes to show high school kids?

I am NOT making this up.

R1 is a GG Power User - impressive!

Anything from Season 7. I remember when I first discovered GG's on Lifetime in high school in the early 2000s, those were the episodes that I truly enjoyed.

That r1 list is spot on for giving these kids a primer. For lesbian humor, "Isn't It Romantic?" is the amazing Lois Nettleton episode (really well done, especially for its time), and "Goodbye Mr. Gordon" is the Lesbian Lovers of Miami episode, which is howlingly funny.

I totally agree r4. I was 8 when GG started and have seen each episode 1000 times and back again and when Logo and Hallmark are on S7 I always get in a good mood — it’s the funniest and I think it’s stayed the freshest.

But isn’t it romantic is still great — the whole Blanche Rose over me thing is genius.

Sorry-- I lost track of this thread. Thank you all for the suggestions. I downloaded season 3 but I will get season 7 like r4 said. I will also download the episodes listed by r3.

I was showing them awesome show intros from the 80s ("The Love Boat" and "Dallas") and they said they liked the Golden Girls. Appareently they watch it with their moms. They are not the first kids to tell me this either. Girl students have told me they like it as well. It's a kind of free period, which is why we are doing this stuff.

Have the 3 Rs been replaced by the two Gs?

My students today brought up the Andy Griffith show. They all know how to whistle the song. Is there a reason they know it?

great original list above at R1. Maybe add Dorothy's New Friend (Barbara Thorndyke is a LEGEND on DL!) as well as the one with Charmaine and Magda (I forget the title)

I don't know about "Blanche's Little Girl." Generation Z may find it too mean-spirited. I've seen them on YouTube complaining about the 'fat-shaming' in that episode.

The one where it seems obvious there was a mixup at the hospital when Dorothy was born is a funny one and it confronts the elephant in the room regarding Sophia and Dorothy’s extreme height difference.

The one where Blanche’s artificially inseminated daughter gives birth is worthy of viewing if only for Sophia’s line “Not as much as you hurt my oonie.”

I’m sure those students of yours will find a way to work it into their vernacular.
