Here’s our chance to focus on the TRULY important issues on American Independence Day.

Vinegar, mustard, a tablespoon full or mayo…maybe a hint of pickles.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 4, 2024 7:55 PM |
Red potatoes, mayo, cream cheese, sour cream, dill.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 4, 2024 7:58 PM |
Aioli (with a light hand), rosemary and fresh green jalapeño and poblano. The best available potato works for me, but I prefer them to hold their shape.
But I like variety. Today I made an American southern mashed-potato type with a pow of sweet relish and more eggs than I use (when I use them). It tasted exactly like grocery-chain potato salad, which uses rubber eggs. At least the homemade tasted homemade, but never again.
I type fat.

Japanese style. No sugar or anything sweet except for a bit of shredded carrot. Mayo, peeled potatoes, maybe some cucumber (pre-salted and squeezed of liquid). Etc.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 4, 2024 8:33 PM |
Diced roasted red patatoes and onions, bacon, green onions and ranch dressing. For people that don’t like mayonnaise based salad.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 4, 2024 8:35 PM |
I’m going to make a potato salad with cucumbers and ranch type dressing
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 4, 2024 8:50 PM |
Don't forget to salt the cucumbers and squeeze out some water.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 4, 2024 8:52 PM |
German potato salad without bacon and vinegar.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 4, 2024 8:56 PM |
Am I the only one who puts celery in mine? I like the crunch. Skin on gold taters, celery, very finely sliced red onion, salt, pepper, mayo, mustard, and hot sauce. Lightly mashed and stirred around to incorporate.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 4, 2024 9:32 PM |
People who put onions in potato salad are white trash.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 4, 2024 9:35 PM |
Green onion or radish greens are fine. Potato, mayo, hard boiled egg, radish, radish greens, green onion, salt, pepper, paprika.
Mustard though? Wtf. Gross.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 4, 2024 9:51 PM |
OP, that pic does not look great....the mayo is drowning EVERYTHING.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 4, 2024 9:53 PM |
Bacon and a splash of cheap zesty Italian dressing improve almost any potato salad recipe
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 4, 2024 9:54 PM |
I’m intrigued by the French and Spanish variations.
I love standard American potato salad so long as it’s not too sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 4, 2024 9:55 PM |
I’m attempting Bang bang potato salad this weekend. Hopefully it doesn’t turn out disgusting.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 4, 2024 9:57 PM |
I don't make potato salad with mayo if we're eating outside. I save it for winter.
I chose French style in your poll, OP. Oil and vinegar (red wine or champagne), a tiny bit of Dijon mustard, and whichever herbs I'm in the mood for. At least basil and parsley, and maybe dill and tarragon if I'm making an especially large batch. I might use just cilantro and parsley if complements the menu and I know everyone likes cilantro. I may use green onions.
Never: hard boiled eggs, regular onions.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 4, 2024 10:57 PM |
Make a regular southern style potato style and then fold in raw lox (salmon) but be careful of any salt that you add because the lox/salmon is salty. DELICIOUS!!! I first tasted it made like this in Paris.
Another delicious add in (and surprisingly so) is a regular southern potato salad and then fold in half almonds. DELICIOUS!!! I first had it served this way in the Bahamas.

Mayonnaise belongs in trailer parks…

[quote] Mustard though? Wtf. Gross.
Huh? There are all different kinds of mustard and I'm sure it's not a half cup.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 4, 2024 11:56 PM |
I use both dill and sweet pickles. I prefer the sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 5, 2024 12:05 AM |
So many weirdo variations. Coleslaw is so much better. Skip the heavy potato gunk and go with some cabbage.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 5, 2024 12:26 AM |
No mayo but otherwise a traditional American.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 5, 2024 12:30 AM |
R9's recipe sounds ideal to me! Celery, yes. And going light on the mayo.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 5, 2024 12:39 AM |
Nancy Hughes made the BEST potato salad.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 5, 2024 12:56 AM |
I just made some:
2 lbs. of peeled potatoes, sliced and sprinkled with red wine vinegar. Salt, pepper, mustard powder, celery, Italian leaf parsley, scallions, gerkins.
Usually I add 2 chopped, hard boiled eggs but those I had weren’t fresh today, so I skipped that. (They floated in water - which is supposed to be a bad sign.)

Didn't somebody end up stabbed after the last potato salad thread?

[quote]Bacon and a splash of cheap zesty Italian dressing improve almost any potato salad recipe
Yes. Bacon makes anything taste better. Italian dressing does not.
Your invitation to the Bar-B-Que is rescinded.

Gelsens potatoe salad is a game changer.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 5, 2024 1:19 AM |
Just made some as well ....
5 Russet potatoes, peele, cubed and boiled for 12ish minutes.
4 eggs. Hard boiled, sliced.
Few tablespoons of dill relish. Patted dry.
Chopped celery & onions.
Capers.
Sliced olives.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 5, 2024 1:24 AM |
Made it this afternoon...
1 lb. bag of small, red and yellow potatoes (did not peel them after boiling)
Scallions, celery, cut up dill pickle spears, two hard boiled eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, splashes of pickle juice
Had barbecued chicken with it...
Had the butcher cut up a whole chicken into eight pieces, Salt the chicken pieces then mix them up in...
A mixture of Russian dressing, small jar of apricot preserves, and a package of French onion soup mix...
Bake at 375 for an hour in a baking dish covered with aluminum foil...
After an hour, bake uncovered for another 30 minutes
Absolutely delicious!
Happy Fourth of July, DataLoungers!

I remember in my 20s, I would add tuna to my mustard potato salad and it was not bad. And with some green vegetables, a complete meal.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 5, 2024 1:26 AM |
[quote]R30 Six WHOLE boiled eggs.
Why not 12, while you’re at it?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 5, 2024 1:27 AM |
In the last thread (about P. salad), there was a huge fight about hard boiled eggs.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 5, 2024 1:27 AM |
I imagine a fight over hard boiled eggs in a potato salad would be as exhausting as discussing the PA snow plow murders. That went for 8 threads.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 5, 2024 1:29 AM |
DAMN! All these variations about simple potato salad! No wonder the question is always; "Who made the potato salad?"
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 5, 2024 1:41 AM |
[quote]I don't make potato salad with mayo if we're eating outside.
Then... what is that called? Boiled potatoes?

[quote]But I like variety. Today I made an American southern mashed-potato type with a pow of sweet relish and more eggs than I use (when I use them). It tasted exactly like grocery-chain potato salad...
For some reason this doesn't sit well with me...

None, I don't like cold potatoes.

[quote]R38 Then... what is that called? Boiled potatoes?
I don’t know the proper proportions, but French potato salad is made with a vinaigrette.
It’s probably in that style.

That was an absolute DL classic. The coverage of PA plow murders was epic and kept me glued to DL.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 5, 2024 2:51 AM |
Those PA snow removal / neighbor dispute / murder-suicide / Jeffrey Spaide threads were peak DL.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 5, 2024 2:55 AM |
mayo if we're eating outside
Unless you make your own, commercial mayo has preservatives out the yang yang, this is an old myth, I'm sure you don't eat commercial mayo though. CuntFace

Pickles. ugh. None.
I now make Loaded Baked Potato Salad.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 45 | July 5, 2024 3:07 AM |
Definitely Gelson’s potatoe salad.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 5, 2024 3:12 AM |
I like loaded baked potatoes...warmed up. Cold loaded baked potato salad does nothing for me.
The best one is a Greek version with fresh herbs, olive oil, some feta, and finely chopped vegetables (of your choice), as well as some olives thrown in.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 5, 2024 3:18 AM |
But alas, there is a Japanese version.

Russet potatoes, green onions, sliced radishes, chopped hardboiled eggs, chopped celery, crumbled crispy bacon and a small amount of bacon fat, mayo to bind and salt and pepper to taste...refrigerate 24 hours and it's perfect.

To serve anything but classic American potato salad on the 4th of July is downright COMMUNIST.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 5, 2024 3:43 AM |
Even amongst Americans, though, there's a lot of variation.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 5, 2024 3:47 AM |
Hmm R49, I posted at R11 and I’m starting to think that radishes in potato salad are a Canadian thing.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 5, 2024 4:52 AM |
BTW - the correct answer to the poll is option 2 - use dill pickles.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 5, 2024 5:06 AM |
I preferred Maureen Bauer's, r25.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 5, 2024 8:53 AM |
Potato, egg, bacon, shallot, parsley, tarragon, a dash of Kewpie mayo, and a spoonful of Greek yogurt.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 5, 2024 9:04 AM |
Okay... I tried something different. I roasted my potatoes and then made my regular potato salad. The results? No difference in taste. The difference is that it took much longer to make the salad.
We shall not be doing that again...
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 16, 2024 1:23 PM |
I think many of these are fine. Red baby potatoes should be unpeeled and take a mustardy champagne vinegar or white wine dressing and fresh herbs.. Idaho potatoes need to be peeled and go in various directions. It's also tricky to get the potatoes cookd but not broken down.
I like deviled egg potato salad with red bell pepper, onions, mayo, mustard. Important to crush some of the hardened yolk in the dressing and use only a portion of the whites, chopped finely, But I see the appeal of German, Japanese and loaded baked potato salad.
