Don’t know where to start.

by Anonymousreply 93January 14, 2024 6:44 PM

Consumer Reports likes LG most and then Samsung. My appliance guy told me buy whatever has the features you really think you'll use and not one more because it's probably gonna die any time after it's been in operation five years. So do your shopping online so you aren't swayed by something you don't need. I've never run my LG through an app.

by Anonymousreply 1January 9, 2024 7:16 PM

What's "What's" OP? Brand, model, style (front vs top load, stacked vs side-by-side, all-in-one) or features like steam cleaning or no need to vent externally?

For consumers, LG seems to be best-rated and Samsung the worst but YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 2January 9, 2024 7:18 PM

I would add one thing... Consumer Reports aren't infallible. They love my Kitchenaid dishwashwer and I can't stand the thing, so if you check those reviews, check real users reviews too because if there's a gap, it will emerge there.

by Anonymousreply 3January 9, 2024 7:25 PM

[quote]What's "What's" OP? Brand, model, style (front vs top load, stacked vs side-by-side, all-in-one) or features like steam cleaning or no need to vent externally?

See I don't know any of these things. All I know is I have to choose between black and white.

I can have side by side or I can have stacked, I can get all in one. I just want to know what other people have.

by Anonymousreply 4January 9, 2024 7:28 PM

Be wary of frontloading washers unless you can leave the door open so that the rubber gasket can get completely dry. People have complained about the mold and mildew that grows and it stinks! I bought GE and love the washer and dryer.

by Anonymousreply 5January 9, 2024 7:31 PM

IMO, you should leave all washer doors open. It’s like making sure a wet shower has ventilation.

I am very happy with my LG ventless washer/dryer combo machine, if that’s what you are looking for. Obviously, a vented dryer is better but depending on your living situation you may not be able to have a vented dryer.

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2024 7:49 PM

R6, I agree. That's why I bought a top loader. Some people who have front-loaders always close the door. Thus the mold and mildew problem.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2024 7:59 PM

I'm very satisfied with my Kenmore Top-loader washer and front door dryer, both purchased at Sears about 10 or 12 years ago.

I agree with Cosmo at r5 and r10 on top loaders.

We had a fancy chrome front loader. It looked super-sleek. But, the rubber gasket on the door smelled bad and because of the position and location of it, we, couldn't leave the door open between washes.

We sold it and bought the Kenmore brands.

I'll say this for Sears. Their brands were well made and lasted. Sears sold Craftsmen brand lawn mowers and those were damn good machines.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2024 8:11 PM

Lupita always does a great job getting out stubborn cum stains from my fine washables.

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2024 8:16 PM

Speed Queen top loader washer/dryer. Expensive but worth it.

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2024 8:17 PM

Do side x side if you have the space. Otherwise with a stackable, when one half breaks down, you have to replace both.

Don’t buy from a big box store. Find an appliance store that has a repair service. They will only work on units they’ve sold and won’t touch ones from Home Depot.

With a front loader, yes you have to leave the door open at all times but any mold/mildew that you do get on the gasket doesn’t affect the clothes being washed.

People claim that top loader’s agitators ruin clothes but I’ve never had a problem.

I’ve heard the combo washer/dryer takes forever, like hours, to dry clothes. Their electric bill must be huge.

by Anonymousreply 15January 9, 2024 8:18 PM

I've been happy with GE. My dryer is 17 years old. My washer started having problems at 13 years and I replaced it with another GE. I recommend a top-loading washer.

by Anonymousreply 16January 9, 2024 8:22 PM

[quote]Speed Queen

No thank you. I've dated too many of those.

by Anonymousreply 17January 9, 2024 8:25 PM

r15 I paid for a stupid Best Buy Plus membership so I was going to buy it there. but that's good to know, I would not have thought of that.

by Anonymousreply 18January 9, 2024 8:27 PM

Should I get a top-loader with or without an agitator?

by Anonymousreply 19January 9, 2024 8:31 PM

^ With , cleans clothes much better

by Anonymousreply 20January 9, 2024 8:33 PM

I also have an old, top-loading Kenmore washer - with agitator. I use mostly gentle cycle for my clothing (white collar job).

I think it's the dryer, more than the washer, that wears down clothing.

by Anonymousreply 21January 9, 2024 8:38 PM

True, it’s best to hang clothes to air dry.

by Anonymousreply 22January 9, 2024 8:49 PM

[quote]True, it’s best to hang clothes to air dry.

Ain't nobody got time for that shit.

by Anonymousreply 23January 9, 2024 8:52 PM

LG makes an amazing dryer. Smart! Old Kenmore Elite washer's been hanging in there for over 20 years (knock wood)

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2024 8:54 PM

it was a whirlpool, actually.

by Anonymousreply 25January 9, 2024 8:54 PM

r19, my Kenmore Top Loader doesn't have an agitator.

It has a sensor (high-efficiency sensor so it only uses the water the weight of the load needs) at the bottom of the basket that shouldn't be covered by anything, so you have to arrange your clothes around it just as though there's an agitator.

I get what r20 is saying, but I think it depends on the amount of cleaning your clothes need.

I haven't missed an agitator. My Kenmore cleans my clothes, but, then again, I work a desk job, I'm not a construction worker.

by Anonymousreply 26January 9, 2024 9:05 PM

[quote]Should I get a top-loader

What other kind is there?

by Anonymousreply 27January 9, 2024 10:37 PM

You're probably only going to use the same three or four settings and cycles regularly. Don't go crazy getting a set with a ton of advanced features. You're not going to use them and are just wasting your money.

by Anonymousreply 28January 9, 2024 11:15 PM

I think the Speed Queen tubs are relatively small so forget washing comforters or heavy bedspreads.

If it weren't for that fact I might think about buying one.

But ... I could just about buy two top-rated washers for the cost of a one SQ.

So I think I'll use Consumer Reports to help me find one of those when the time comes. My laundry pair turn 30 years old in May, so I am doing my research now.

by Anonymousreply 29January 9, 2024 11:47 PM

GE Top Loaders about 5 years old. Not too complicated with lots of options but , damn they are noisy. DO they make quiet washers?

by Anonymousreply 30January 9, 2024 11:53 PM

Kenmores are great BUT do not get one without an agitator. Terrible.

by Anonymousreply 31January 9, 2024 11:57 PM

Are washers still doing that dirt sensing thing?

by Anonymousreply 34January 10, 2024 12:07 AM

Honestly unless you normally have a lot of variety in what you wash, I would buy the most basic model you can find, without all the bells and whistles which can break or malfunction. I have a washer without an agitator and I don't feel like it cleans as good as my really old machine that had an agitator but my clothes aren't that dirty to begin with. I almost never use all the functions that my washer has, just either the colors or white function. My new machine doesn't have just a spin cycle, you have to rinse and spin and there is no soak function for dying or allowing whites to sit in bleach for a while. You have to run a clean cycle once a month with special cleaning solution for High Efficiency machines. I always figure the machine was getting clean while cleaning your clothes.

Get the new GE washer-dryer combo! Lesbians love them!!!!

by Anonymousreply 37January 10, 2024 2:54 AM

Go for a front loader.

A to load washer is generally not as effective at removing stains as a front loader. Plus, an agitator will cause friction as it washes the clothes, leading to possible damage, particularly to delicates.

I have a front-loading LG washer and gas dryer on pedestals that allow for storage drawers - perfect for keeping detergent and fabric softener, etc.

by Anonymousreply 39January 10, 2024 3:51 AM

If I had the space and the money, I'd get a commercial top loader. The kind that had coin slots.

by Anonymousreply 42January 10, 2024 5:09 AM

R40, I just read that Sears may try to revive. Right now, there are very few still open.

The google thingy may help you locate one near you.

by Anonymousreply 43January 10, 2024 1:50 PM

I cannot use a front load machine because the depth of my laundry closet would not allow the door to be left open to dry out the seals.

So I will buy another top-load machine when the time comes.

by Anonymousreply 44January 10, 2024 1:55 PM

The condo I bought had a stacked, front loader which I've been using for the past three years. It's old and when I replace it I am definitely getting a top loader. I don't have the space for side by side W&D, but I'm definitely not getting a front loading machine. I just went on Home Depot, Best Buy and Lowes websites and looked at them, and looked at the reviews. I always like to read the bad reviews to see what people complain about. If three or four bad reviews all complain about the same thing that's a red flag. In the past I have found that Best Buy has a good selection online. The other thing I believe when it comes to appliances: Don't get too many bells and whistles. A lot of the features are unnecessary, just jack up the price, and add more things that can go wrong and require costly repairs.

by Anonymousreply 45January 10, 2024 2:23 PM

OP think of your lifestyle and of who is going to use the W/D. Do you have pets? Are you athletic or work out, or do a lot of outdoor work? Are there kids in the house or is it just one or t wo adults? Decide what you need. No point in over buying something you won't get full use of. If it's just you, or you and a partner, keep it simple. Also, IMO I wouldn't buy the combination W/D. I've read that the dryers are problematic.

by Anonymousreply 47January 10, 2024 2:34 PM

We bought an LG combo. few months back.

Helpful hint: maybe don't buy it at Home Depot - I learned they give you only 48 hours to return if there's an issue. We didn't hve one but had I known that I wouldn't have purchased with them.

Also, check with your various utilities to see if you get any sort of rebate for the purchase of a washer or dryer. Our electric company gave us a $75 rebate and the water company a $150 rebate. It has to be on their list of efficient machines/models, but most new ones are.

by Anonymousreply 48January 10, 2024 2:41 PM

Miele. I recently had a regular service visit on an 8 year old, out of standard warranty washer, and they decided to write it off and give me a new one because there was a tiny spot of rust on the interior frame. I never would have known. Two weeks later, an upgrade from my prior washer arrives at no cost. It does everything but suck my cock. When you buy certain brands, you’re also buying the fact they’ll stand behind their product and reputation.

by Anonymousreply 49January 10, 2024 2:49 PM

Which washing machine sucks your cock?

by Anonymousreply 50January 10, 2024 2:53 PM

And is it a front loader or top loader? Does it take your load?

by Anonymousreply 51January 10, 2024 2:58 PM

Maytag - I bought a new Maytag Front Load washer and companion dryer over 18 years ago when I moved to my (then) new house. They are both still running strong w/no issues. They aren't the fancy ones w/digital controls and glass viewing doors. I think I paid about 1,400.00 for the pair - Neptune models with touch controls on the top panel. Since the laundry 'closet' is upstairs, I can leave the washer door open between loads to help prevent the smells that plague some front loaders. I do run an empty load with some sort of Arm & Hammer product every 6 months or so which also helps.

I'm sure when I have to replace them the cost would be at least 2K - even for a basic front loader pair!

by Anonymousreply 52January 10, 2024 2:59 PM

I had an apartment sized, stacking, front loading Bosch washer and dryer. Worked fine for me. I was surprised at how good the washer was at getting out stains.

by Anonymousreply 53January 10, 2024 3:00 PM

Just thought I would let the readers of this thread know that my sheets are out drying on the line in this 33° weather. They’ll be dry by noon in this dry northernly breeze.

There is nothing quite like line dried bed linens.

by Anonymousreply 54January 10, 2024 3:09 PM

r54 - You are right - there is NOTHING better than lined dried bed linens! I live in the country and sometimes put my pillows outside to air out and boy do they smell wonderful when I bring them inside. You can't buy that smell anywhere no matter the 'fresh linen' fragrances they peddle.

by Anonymousreply 55January 10, 2024 3:32 PM

@r43, "The google thingy may help you locate one near you."

Sears? As if... 🙄

by Anonymousreply 56January 10, 2024 3:57 PM

Actually I miss the old days when Sear's Kenmore brand was pretty amazing. OP, I'd look at GE, and LG too. Make sure you measure your space and allow room around the appliances. Consumer Reports was t he bible for rating appliances, but they have a paywall so you may not be able to read their ratings.

by Anonymousreply 57January 10, 2024 4:05 PM

Wirecutter can be a good consumer comparison source. They are part of the NYT but if you search the appliance you're looking for and "Wirecutter" you can usually get a non-paywalled access to that particular article.

by Anonymousreply 59January 10, 2024 4:08 PM

I have LGs and they've been fine. No problems.

by Anonymousreply 60January 10, 2024 4:16 PM

r56 There are a number of Sears still open ... or reopened. Four in California: Concord, Stockton, Whittier, Burbank.

by Anonymousreply 61January 10, 2024 4:51 PM

When I go to Lowe's and Home Depot, almost all the floor models are top-loaders. I guess that's what people are buying, instead of the front-loaders.

I like the idea that machines without an agitator allow you to wash a comforter, or allow for a bigger load, as there is more space. I need to do more research on how well they clean, though.

by Anonymousreply 62January 10, 2024 4:52 PM

Overloading a washer, or putting items into it that are too big and cumbersome is not good for the washer. It unbalances the drum. For large items go to a laundromat, unless you know someone who has an oversized, large capacity set you can use.

by Anonymousreply 63January 10, 2024 4:59 PM

I hate my front loader because the spin cycle fucks up all the damned time. My towels are always soaking wet and I have to wring them out by hand.

by Anonymousreply 64January 10, 2024 5:00 PM

Sears Kenmore washers have always been made by Whirlpool. Sears helped set-up Whirlpool in business.

Maytag products aren't what they used to be. My apartment sized toploader/combo with dryer is a Maytag and probably 25-30 years old (predates my ownership). The last time it was serviced, I asked the tech what to buy now and he said that for that type of washer, Maytag is no longer as reliable or well-made as in the past. He recommended a GE because it is easier to service (front comes off for access).

by Anonymousreply 65January 10, 2024 6:31 PM

[quote] Concord, Stockton, Whittier, Burbank.

I could never. Burbank? That's where the Poors are.

by Anonymousreply 66January 10, 2024 6:44 PM

R64 agree. We had a tall front loader that looked almost like a laundromat washer but it could never spin towels and blankets would come out sopping wet.

Our new LG top loader doesn't have an agitator but it spins all those things beautifully.

by Anonymousreply 67January 10, 2024 6:45 PM

For those of us who do our own appliance repairs, or at least attempt to, we know that GE is bad to gouge on replacement part prices.

GE Appliance manufacturing was sold to Chinese Haier so expect ramped up planned obsolescence.

by Anonymousreply 68January 10, 2024 6:46 PM

@r61, I can't tell you how glad I am the mediocre and mundane of California have a nice place to shop. Is there anything actually in the stores? Oh, wait, there's two pair of Toughskins jeans in Husky and a Sears Best rug shampooer 🙄

Not true anymore. Some may still be, but front loaders are (or used to be) made by LG.

My folks have an LG top loader but it doesn't have an agitator much like a front loader. I like it a lot.

by Anonymousreply 72January 10, 2024 7:37 PM

I have a GE front loader (with pedestal) and matching gas dryer. They're both probably close to 20 years old and I've never had a problem with either one.

by Anonymousreply 73January 10, 2024 8:45 PM

R61, I'm not sure I'd buy a washer / dryer from a department store that's struggling, like Sears.

by Anonymousreply 74January 10, 2024 11:58 PM

A poster upthread cautioned about buying appliances from the Big Box stores and I second this warning.

I bought my induction range from Lowes and it was a miserable experience. Never again!

I wish I had bought from a locally owned appliance store, a store that cares about what they sell and is part of the community. Big box stores only care about shareholders.

by Anonymousreply 76January 11, 2024 12:21 AM

I bought a basic Roper top load washer and electric dryer in 2000......cost about $1100.

Washer lasted until 2015 and dryer until 2017. Bought the same kind of both when they gave up the ghost.....found these two at different times in scratch/dent at Lowe's and they both were less than $900. Scratch/dent has the same warranty.....but check with you sales person.

Unfortunately the Roper washer does not suck my cock. Probably you have to get a Siemens to do that.

r76 - when I posted (r52) - I did just that - purchased from the local appliance store. I agree that local is better - in addition to the Washer/Dryer I purchased from them I also replaced my GE fridge (after only 7 years and numerous repairs) with a Maytag (11 years no issue) and my GE OTR microwave (15 years) with a Whirlpool. Since they are local they will respond more promptly than Lowe's or Home Depot. I still have my GE gas range which has had no issues in over 18 years.

by Anonymousreply 81January 11, 2024 1:13 AM

I like a top-loading washing machine.

Is there an advantage of a front-loading machine?

by Anonymousreply 82January 11, 2024 1:23 AM

Front loading machines use a lot less water. Why are you hellbent on ruining the environment, R82?

When I first got a high efficiency, front loading machine, I was skeptical about how good it would wash but it was very good at getting out stains (Bosch brand).

by Anonymousreply 83January 11, 2024 1:29 AM

Water usage is minimal for a single, or two-person household. It's not like any of us are doing multiple loads a week for a family of 4.

by Anonymousreply 84January 11, 2024 1:34 AM

Riiight, R84. There's a big difference in how much water a high efficiency front loading machine uses compared to a top loader. Why are you so determined to waste freshwater?

What? I'm not R61, but I think he / she was just trying to let people in California know where they might find the Kenmore / Whirlpool washers & dryers (Sears). Nobody's saying these stores are where you will be hobnobbing with the rich and famous. What the hell?

by Anonymousreply 86January 11, 2024 3:48 AM

This is like an Onion article.

“Area homosexual who swallows multiple strangers’ sperm underneath a smelly pier every summer thinks the store where he deigns to buy a washing machine makes him the second coming of Edith Wharton.”

by Anonymousreply 87January 11, 2024 4:18 AM

Well aside from Best Buy, Lowes and Home Depot what are the options. I don't think there is a local independent store selling appliances in the metro Atlanta area? And if I did find one it would cost a lot more.

by Anonymousreply 88January 11, 2024 5:22 AM

Best Buy, Lowe's, and Home Depot aren't enough?

by Anonymousreply 89January 11, 2024 5:29 AM

I never had any problems dealing with Best Buy or Lowe’s. If you’re buying a reliable brand of appliance to start with, you shouldn’t need to ever deal with the store again after it’s delivered.

by Anonymousreply 90January 11, 2024 12:14 PM

r88 I bought a trash compactor years ago at the Sears scratch and dent outlet in Stone Mountain years ago.

And I bought several appliances at Bob Carroll Appliances in Decatur but I think that store has closed.

by Anonymousreply 91January 11, 2024 12:42 PM

I have had a matching LG front loader washer and a gas dryer for about 6 years now. I have had no issues with either, but I don't use most of the features on them, like the steamer functions. Should actually check those out. Might like them.

I have them on pedestals, which is a nice feature.

by Anonymousreply 92January 14, 2024 9:50 AM

I went to see the washer dryers at Best Buy yesterday

I had no idea that the pedestals for front loaders cost nearly $600 a pair! What a ripoff. I will by a top loader on principle alone.

I liked the Whirlpool Smart Top Load Washer with 2 in 1 Removable Agitator and LG High-Efficiency Top Load Washer with 6Motion Technology

I would link them here but I cannot link to Best Buy for some reason
